Kaganovich, Lazar Moiseyevich

   Soviet politician. Born in Kiev, he joined the Bolsheviks in 1911. From 1914 he was a member of the communist party's Kiev committee. He played an active role in the period leading up to the October Revolution of 1917. In 1930 he became a member of the committee which controlled the communist party in the Soviet Union. He remained in the Politburo until 1957 when he was accused of belonging to the anti-Party group of Molotov, Malenkov and Shepilov and dismissed from all government posts.
